The Nitrogen Cycle
Discussion Questions
1 The atmosphere is 80% nitrogen: why do you think plants and animals can't use nitrogen as it is found in the atmosphere?
Answer: nitrogen was first converted into organic compounds before the living organisms can take up.
2. Explain what is meant by nitrogen fixation.
Answer: Nitrogen fixation always occurs when bacteria convert nitrogen gas (N2) into organic compounds that living organisms take up.
3. What is the role of bacteria in the nitrogen cycle?
Answer: Bacteria actually uses and transforms the nitrogen into nitrogen that can again be used .
4.Why don't legumes need nitrogen-containing fertilizers?
Answer: Legumes "fix" nitrogen in nodules on their roots, so they do not need additional nitrogen-containing fertilizers.
5.Why is nitrogen so important for living things?
Answer: Because Nitrogen is a key building block in a number of important molecules, such as nucleic acids, amino acids, and proteins. Without it, life as we know it would be impossible.
6. What are the processes involved in the nitrogen cycle?
Answer: Nitrogen fixation, ammonification, nitrification, assimilation, denitrification.

Lesson on Energy Flow in the Ecosystem
Please answer the following questions.
*Where do plants get the energy they need to grow?
Answer: They get the energy to the sun.
*What do plants use the sun's energy to manufacture?
Answer: They use the sun's energy to manufacture the sugar.
Answer: They use most of their energy to the leaves or absorbed by the plants and warms them.
*How much of the energy that the plant captures through photosynthesis ends up stored as starch in the kernel?
Answer: The 5% of the energy.
*For what does the cow use the energy from the corn?
Answer: The cow uses the energy to produce and power it's muscle cells.
*How much of the energy stored in the corn gets passed on to you in burgers?
Answer: 10% of the energy.
*For what do you use the energy in the burgers?
Answer: I use the energy to think, grow, jump, and anything that the humans do.
*How would eating more plants help us better feed the many people in the world?
Answer: You lose 90% of the captured solar energy by passing it through animals.
*What else besides energy do we get from plants and animals? When we eat them?
Answer: We also get the nutrients of the plants.
